GTA Radio

I took my GTA for an MOT today - it passed . However on the way I started thinking about changing the radio for something that works a bit better.

My car is an early GTA with the small separate tuner & the combined Equaliser / tape deck. My thoughts are to leave the large unit in place & to pop in a modern radio where the existing tuner is, & use the existing aerial & speakers. A modern unit with a flip over front would look ok.

Now the question. Is the tuner unit a standard din fitting. I don't want to start chopping the console up.

The main bottom unit is standard double din but the clock is smaller than single din and not standard. There is a factory adaptor that gives you a double din, storage pocket and space for a standard Renault clock of the same era.

I'm taking a different approach, I've bought a DAB/Aux in device that you mount behind the dashboard and operate with a small auxiliary screen. It injects into the aerial so you tune to it.
I'll find the brand tonight, I'm putting it in the "alarm space" under the passengers feet and have put a dab aerial on the lhs A pillar.
This keeps the remote working...for volume anyway.

Presumably the factory adaptor that Stephen mentions is not readily available. I like the sound of the aux unit mentioned by Metters. If it is hard wired into the aerial socket, the sound quality should be pretty good & the car will look standard.

Can I have your old radio or are you hanging on to it?

I’ve got loads of radios early and late types if you are desperate for one of parts.

I’ll take a picture of the factory adaptor next week as I’ve got one in my own car. Probably got some new ones too.

You could try this approach - an Alpine double din unit (what else!) plus a cover plate for the upper slot....the sound is actually very good (and sooo much better than the original unit) with the stock speakers but you could also upgrade those.

That's pretty much the same as mine, I just left the clock in place tho

Thanks again. I am going to order a new double din unit. It looks like the simplest option.
