For fans of the 1980s.....

Postby Dave Williams » Sat Dec 30, 2017 10:34 am

I know many of you appreciate 1980s cars....
This beauty came up as an eBay suggestion for me...I think it captures the spirit of 1980s motoring (white/red, body kit, spoiler, turbo charged, convertible, bold interior)...thinking it would look good on the school run..?

Had a Capri in the early 90's. It was a 1.6 but I blew that up when I was racing someone, tried to change into 5th at about the ton, that was a bit of a blonde moment when I realised I wasn't in the works van and it only had 4 gears. It wasn't happy when it went into 3rd instead, the conrod left a lovely hole in the block....
I managed to nurse it home about 2 miles at not much more than walking pace with smoke pouring out, left a lovely snail trail of oil and water until that run out
Dropped a 2.0 in it, then took it back out, rebored and ported it, pair of Webers, Janspeed exhaust, all that cost more than I paid for the car.
Was a proper quick car, or at least felt quick. thought I was really cool with my pepperpots and my 225 x 60 x 13 rears....

Really had to learn a different driving style in a Capri with that whole thing where the controls felt like they were binary.
Brakes, either on or off, you were either heading towards a ditch with all 4 wheels locked or heading towards a ditch with no brakes at all.
Steering reminded me of those old remote controlled cars, it seemed to be either full lock left, straight ahead or full lock right, didn't seem the wheel did much apart from operated a switch to turn the wheels one way or another. ;)

Oh, and of course that good old Ford gearstick which used to come out in your hands if you changed too quick.....

Stupidly I scrapped it after the MOT and Tax ran out because I couldn't afford to fix it or pay for storage, man, the cars I let slip through my fingers......

Every tale of Capri ownership I've heard contains the word "ditch".

I showed my wife the Capri above...the first words uttered... "Dad had one of those ..put it in a ditch"

Or if you live in the Fens you put it in a dyke! oooher! Mind you most of them ditches/dykes around there are full of water and people often don't come out alive. Could be many Capri's lost in the mists of time waiting for Tony Robinson and Time Team to rediscover them buried in a bronze age settlement!! LOL
