Ratty up a hill

Postby clee » Sat Dec 30, 2017 7:09 pm

Well now ...after many years of fecking about the car is done enough to compete in something...
I have entered the local championship and first date is end of March at Rockingham.
But ....it seems I need a MSA logbook to compete as the car is modded/non road legal.I wouldn't need one to do circuit racing and if I was doing that then I could enter hillclimbs etc as an occasional event ....
Go figure :wtf So next to get it scruted and sign off .Hopefully there is a qualified guy in Notts .

How hard would it be to get an MOT?

In case that’s an easier/cheaper option.

Not too difficult but means dropping in full lights mainly ...horn ...washwipe
£38 and the costs of getting a National class scrutineer to come and see the car + I suppose I get it 'signed off' before I get anywhere and find it fails.
Just a heads up to anyone else really.Seems a bit odd I don't need it for circuit racing :thinking

Most clubs down south were very flexible about this and didn't really care, but maybe as we were circuit racers as well it made a difference, the one place we had an issue was .... Rockingham as it was a BARC midland event and ours was a bit of a guest championship within the event. I even emailed the organiser before the event requesting a log book be done at the event but there was a heated conversation with the chief scrutineer and eventually they talked me out of having one done and allowed us to run anyway. Once I did get a log book later in the season I was never once asked to produce it often volunteering it and getting blank looks like they had never seen one before.

Assuming you don't have a friendly scrute local to you ( their contact details are in the blue book) who is willing to come and do this for you (most cannot be arsed) then I would request one be done at that first event and make sure you get a printed copy of the response to bring along. If they kick up a fuss then say you are circuit racing mainly and just sprinting to support the local clubs out of the kindness of your heart.
Rockingham was a fantastic venue for a sprint, seeing my car inches from the wall taking the same lines as Kenny Brack did in his Indy car was a sight to behold and an antidote to the countless airfield courses we did. We did win, needless to say!
Make sure you got a HANS as well.
never thought I would want a list but now find myself needing one just to remind me: Clio V6 230, 5 gt turbo, 5 Gordini turbo, Megane RS 300 Trophy.

Cheers Mark.
I've downloaded the vehicle passport form and that all seems straightforward.I'll have to go over the safety items in book but that's mainly extra extinguisher pipes and nozzles for the front tank + firewall regs are a bit of a joke seeing my bulkheads are 80% fibreglass #seecedric

Looks like there is a local scrute in notts so I'll ask nicely first and see.
Rockingham should be a good first outing as will suit Ratty.Get that blower spooling down the main straight.

An alternative option;
You could take your car to a meet, without entering, and get the car log booked after everyone that is competing has been done.
Clearly, it will pan out better if pre arranged.
Regulations for events should state who the scrute for the day is, so you can contact them directly, but may also need some sort of entry pass from the organisers too.
The scrute has little else to do all day unless cars keeping falling off and need to be inspected after repairs.

I am told that the Midland Speed Championship has plenty of rounds and is quite active.

Might be an option but not before end of March and probably more complicated and costly by the time I've got there and back, hired trailer etc .If the local guy will play then obviously I'll pay for his time.
Just priced up some extra bits for the extinguisher and it's going to be cheaper to buy a whole new system than the extras I need :wtf
Got to save for HANS and a new helmet as well so going through the RATS' Stores and end of year sale to come :up

read on another site, cannot remember where, you were considering running in the racing car class. I was told once I needed to enter this class instead but a quick look in the blue book states a max height of 90cm. I am guessing ratty is higher than that by a margin. A clio is way higher anyway.
The only other class race cars gets lumbered into is Sports Libra but even then you are illegible if you comply with another class regs. (that's to stop cars entering a less competitive class to get easy points).

I would say Ratty definately falls into "Modified Series Production Cars" or "Modified Specialist Production Cars".
Racing cars are open wheeled single seaters and sports libre is for home built specials...... Ratty is defo a production car of sorts.

Section S
12.1. Modified Series Production Cars. Must have been
originally available through the normal commercial
channels of the manufacturer in quantities of not less
than 1,000 vehicles within 12 consecutive months.

12.1.1. Vehicles produced in lesser quantities may be
admitted subject to the manufacturer obtaining
approval from MSA.

12.2. Modified Specialist Production Cars. Must have
been originally available through the normal
commercial channels of the manufacturer in quantities
of not less than 20 chassis within 12 consecutive
months.

I've still got some bits to do to get Ratty log booked and entry not yet open but first outing end of March at Rockingham if accepted.
Not sure how it all works as yet but I'm sure it'll all become clear....

Well they've accepted the entry it seems as the entrance fee has now been processed...Now just the small matter of getting Ratty's passport to play .....I might have to plead ignorance and look big sad-face if it doesn't get done in time .....
New extinguisher is here to be plumbed in and I suppose I best fix the split water hose to the head or we won't get very far.
No space at RATS for Ratty atm tho ....looking into bigger premises but that wont be for another year :Douh

If you have joined Nottingham Sports car Club, they should have or will know a friendly person to passport your race beast at shortish notice.
