Megasquirt installation - how to time my A610?

Postby r5gordini » Mon Feb 20, 2017 1:05 pm

Hi All,

It's getting closer!! The day when I can power it up and test sensors and the like...

One question - how do I time (as in ignition timing) the engine?

I don't see a way of finding a TDC marker on the flywheel and using a timing light...

I'd need to know how to align with the factory TDC sensor and the missing teeth and use that to feed in to the Megasquirt tuning application.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Andrew

On the GTA, I seem to remember there are -5 0 5 10 degree marks on the bell housing. near the top, about the same area as the TDC sensor ...... but on the other side of the engine.
Additionally, on the chain cover, there are some TDC degree markings above the crank pulley too and should be a small "nick" in the back of the crank pulley. Will need good light to see these. Unfortunately, my chain cover does not have these, so not 100% sure all do.

There are two notches on the crank pulley so you need to know which one is correct but the easiest way to get near enough is to pull plug #1 and put a stick in .....carefully turn over and feel the rise to tdc and then drop .This will get you pretty close and then just mark the pulley/cover with some tipex for strobing .
Be careful as you are working with a pot at 45 degrees so can easily lock up the feeler stick .

3 missing teeth on the flywheel and this is where I think you'll have issues ....I know on the Adapt it would reset itself/get confused with the pattern .Best way round this is to fit a pulley trigger wheel .Other option is to machine the fly but ....

Awesome, guys.

Thank you!!!

Yes I am bothered about it getting confused with the trigger pattern but I wanted to try as is. I can always change to a 36-1 or add a camshaft trigger if that would help.

I will let you know.

Now at the final stages of wiring up the coils and injectors. All sensors wired up and wires routed. Turbo back in situ.

Adaptronic worked for me using the Renault flywheel. Only saw issues, when taking off from rest if the revs dropped below about 700rpm, then it seemed to get bogged down, and stay bogged down. After a restart, it was always fine though.

There's always something like this.

The Alfa V6 doesn't have timing marks on the crank so this is the only way to get it bang on.

I had the Adapt play silly buggers with the 3 gap fly .It would reset and run like a bag-O-shite ,switch off and back on and all fine .Used to do it quite a lot .Crank pulley trigger and no issues at all ever .

That's a very fancy stick Bob :up
