New GTA Project

Postby Tony Smith » Thu Jan 05, 2017 7:50 pm

Bought another cheap GTA (Project - Glutton for Punishment?) for a third project. Good solid car but been unused for a fair while and paint is awful. On the upside not really any major corrosion spotted so far and headlamp lamps are good.

So after my Safrane Biturbo engined GTA

and my 2.9 injection GTA

Image

it was a question of what to do next?

There is only one engine I would put in, and that has two extra pots....

As long as it's not a rover v8 (less power than the prv, usually) or its steel block buick sisters.....all that weight would make the handling....more interesting.
A 90 degree v8 should be a neat install as the height could be quite close to the PRV. Gearbox and torque are words that would worry me, A610 was a challenge for th UN1....lotus v8 used to kill them.
Reliability kit for the gearbox is expensive as I know you know....but then a custom bell housing won't be free either.
Will be an interesting build.

It will be V8 but Chevy LS3. All aluminium, weight virtually identical to a PRV with a turbo bolted on. Plan is to be fully trimmed road car sans rear seats which will have a R26R style cage. Uprated everything, exploring some gearbox tweeks to save buying £2500 of bits to strengthen it. Bolt in driveshafts. I've talking to a few people and they reckon if your sensible and avoid using all the torque in 5th the boxes will take high 300 ft/lbs. I have a few spare ones. Going to wrap in Rothmans Europa Cup colours. Very probably sit on A610 turbines.

No you cannot linear power all the way from tick over, have been thinking of building one but decided the gearbox would not do the torque low down but you could probably manage that through the Ecu limiting it. Well any gear wheel spinning plus the sound! may be I will, it would be an animal no I would not have a license within a week. :crazy

Don't forget that the less weight you have then the less problem you have that the torque will damage the gearbox or driveshafts. It needs something to act against after all, so less weight can only be a good thing.
I'm just here for the gasoline.

I think that porker is an LS3 and 2 turbos so the 1200bhp is quite well spread across the range (or that may be a different car).

Wow! That'll be incredible. FYI - I am planning to use LS1 coils on my A610.

You cannot beat a v8 the sound track the torque very addictive, the down side the GAS mileage back in the 80s I lived on the Texas panhandle, we built a pick up using an old race hemi engine with a quick shift autobox absolutely amazing every time it change gear you could not stop your head hitting the back window. Twin saddle Tank's 20 gallon you would get through in 2hrs plus tyres, the induction noise is imprinted on my brain. :crazy

Gas Monkey put a turbo LS3 into a 911. Seemed sacrilege, but it worked.

It's proving really hard for me to update this thread as about 80% of the time I get an error message and the message disappears so for anybody interested follow this link.
